Stitching Through the Dog Days of Summer

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer. And what better way to endure these hottest of days than by stitching a dog canvas poolside or inside the cool conditioned air.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days officially begin July 3 and last through August 11. The expression “Dog Days” originated with the Ancient Romans who believed the rising of the dog star, Sirius in the constellation Canis Major, influenced the sun and ushered in the period of heat, drought, and plague.

The Ancient Egyptians also commemorated the same general period, however, for them, the rising of Sirius, which they referred to as The Nile Star, was seen as more of a good omen, bringing the rising waters of the Nile, which deposited the rich alluvial soil that allowed for agriculture.
